Martin’s latest book “Game Over: Affluence for a Few, Democracy for No One, Nationalism for Everyone – and Then What?” (Game Over: Wohlstand für wenige, Demokratie für niemand, Nationalismus für alle – und dann?) was published in 2018. It weaves together a wide variety of developments – from growing inequality and the social divide to trade conflicts, from digitalization and neo-nationalism to the showdown in the EU. Professor Dr. Roland Czada and Professor Dr. Christoph König spoke to the writer.

The November 2018 Congressional elections marked the midterm of Donald Trump’s presidency – and despite all hopes of a premature end, the possibility of the most controversial US President winning a second term no longer seems that far-fetched. While for the Democrats, the Trump “nightmare” has become a daily-recurring reality, the Republicans celebrate the President’s successes, especially in view of the radical-conservative overhaul of institutions and the aggressive implementation of the program of relentless “economic nationalism” promised during electoral campaigns: America First!

Almost every day there are reports from war zones in Europe’s neighborhood. Less attention is given to the possibilities and limitations of peace and mediation processes. In commemoration of the 370th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia, proclaimed in Osnabrück and Münster, this Peace Forum is dedicated to the topic of “Making peace”.

Liao Yiwu, born in Sichuan Province in 1958, is an exiled writer living in Berlin. He fled China via Vietnam in 2012, and was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade for his novel entitled Die Wiedergeburt der Ameisen in the same year. The reading revolves around this novel, which has only been published in German – the Chinese manuscript was smuggled out of prison bit by bit.

Many still have high expectations of “social networks,” the internet, and digital media in general, resulting in a gold-rush mentality with regard to the commercial opportunities involved. Colorful promises of happiness and liberty spring from the buzzword “digitalization”: text, sound, and images can be shared with an unlimited number of people. News, information, and knowledge are freely accessible, as are all kinds of games and entertainment.

Die Schlagworte im Titel des Friedensgesprächs standen für aktuelle Befürchtungen in Europa und den USA: Brexit, die Aufkündigung der Mitgliedschaft in der EU durch Großbritannien, der Wahlsieg des ›verrückten‹ Präsidentschaftskandidaten Trump in den USA und der Aufstieg ›populistischer‹ Parteien und Bewegungen beherrschten die Debatten.

Danse macabre? – Mathematik und Statistik der Rentenversicherung rechnen mit Leben und Tod. Die arbeitenden Jungen müssen für die erschöpften Alten bis zu deren Ende zahlen, so sieht es das Umlagesystem vor. Der gerechte Ausgleich zwischen den Generationen besteht darin, dass jeder mal in der einen Rolle ist, dann in der anderen. »Altersarmut« ist nur in gesetzlich zulässiger Höhe vorgesehen, »demografischer Wandel« macht die Neujustierung der Stellschrauben des Systems erforderlich. – Soweit, so funktional.
