Four works, four worlds – linked by a quest for humanity and expressiveness in times of existential challenge. Ludwig van Beethoven’s overture to Fidelio opens the evening with a heroic flourish: a passionate plea for courage, freedom and hope. A new work by the Danish composer Matias Vestergård Hansen, commissioned jointly by two Danish orchestras and the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra, adds a contemporary touch. The piano part is performed by the Danish pianist Gustav Piekut. A quiet counterpoint is provided by Lukas Foss’s Elegy for Anne Frank, which links memory and the present, pain and dignity. This exploration of Anne Frank’s legacy is the conceptual continuation of our first music theatre production, the world premiere of Peter van Pels by Anno Schreier. Arthur Honegger’s Symphony No. 3, written in the wake of the horrors of the Second World War, concludes the evening as a poignant call for peace and humanity.
