Freedom of art is an essential part of our pluralistic and free society and a significant achievement worthy of protection, which enriches more than just our cultural life. Although freedom of art is a right enshrined in the German Basic Law, contemporary art in its various forms is coming under increasing pressure. At times, polarising discourses develop and accusations of cancel culture or censorship are voiced. Recently, debates have often been sparked by the distinction between art and political activism, especially in the context of accusations of anti-Semitism or criticism of government action. In Osnabrück, too, the debate about artistic freedom is repeatedly conducted in a public and controversial manner. What significance does artistic freedom have for our democracy, and what threats does it face? What are the limits of artistic freedom and how does it relate to other fundamental rights, such as freedom of expression or the protection of religious feelings? Is it even possible to separate the work from the artist?
Admission is free. Registration for the event is not required.
