It is the largest and most important anti-war composition ever. It requires well over 200 participants, divided into a large choir, a boys’ choir, a large symphony orchestra and a chamber orchestra as well as three soloists. It was commissioned in 1962 for the celebrations to mark the consecration of the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral, which had been destroyed by German aerial bombs on the night of November 14/15, 1940. The corruption of war on the one hand and the question of forgiveness on the other are the central themes of the work, which are presented with great tonal richness. The text is based on the Latin Mass for the Dead and anti-war poems by the young English poet Wilfred Owen, who wrote them during the First World War, which he fell victim to a few days before its end. After 25 years, the work was performed again in Osnabrück

May 13, 2023, 6 pm, Hoher Dom zu Osnabrück

Picture gallery

v.l.
