Dr. Hans-Peter Martin was born in Bregenz on Lake Constance in 1957. After attending school for a year in California, he studied Law and Political Science at the University of Vienna, where he earned the title Dr. jur. in 1984. While still a student, he worked for the German newsmagazine \u201cDer Spiegel,\u201d and was appointed as their South American correspondent in 1989, moving on to Prague and Vienna in 1996. Martin was an independent Member of the European Parliament between 1999 and 2014. His nonfiction books, including \u201cBitter Pills\u201d (Bittere Pillen<\/em>) and \u201cThe Global Trap\u201d (Die Globalisierungsfalle<\/em>) (together with Harald Schumann), have sold over seven million copies worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martin\u2019s latest book \u201cGame Over: Affluence for a Few, Democracy for No One, Nationalism for Everyone \u2013 and Then What?\u201d (Game Over: Wohlstand f\u00fcr wenige, Demokratie f\u00fcr niemand, Nationalismus f\u00fcr alle \u2013 und dann?<\/em>) was published in 2018. It weaves together a wide variety of developments \u2013 from growing inequality and the social divide to trade conflicts, from digitalization and neo-nationalism to the showdown in the EU. Martin especially warns against the Chinese model of \u201ccapitalist surveillance communism\u201d and challenges the political center to show the \u201ccourage to be radical.\u201d \u201cA stimulatingly contentious book,\u201d wrote \u201cDie Zeit,\u201d which called for \u201chopefully heated debates on the topic.\u201d The European issues raised by the book were the subject of the Peace Forum: Professor Dr. Roland Czada and Professor Dr. Christoph K\u00f6nig spoke to the writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
