Under the recurring annual motif of \u00bbEurope\u2019s take on Germany\u00ab, Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg\u2019s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, held the German Unity Day Lecture. The longest serving foreign minister in the EU particularly focused on the future of Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bbI have been engaged as Luxembourg\u2019s Foreign Minister and in Europe for 15 years. I know the weaknesses of the European Union. And sometimes they can also be demotivating. But at the end of the day we have to say that the European Union is the greatest peace project of the 20th century. And it is our duty to take this project into the 21st century and to make sure that it survives. What is the alternative to Europe? The alternative to Europe is nationalism, is war.\u00ab (Jean Asselborn in an interview with the Aachener Zeitung, February 1, 2019)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luxembourg lies at the heart of Europe and is the smallest of Germany\u2019s nine <\/a>neighboring countries. The country is the seat of numerous European institutions and is officially multilingual, making it an ideal candidate for advancing the European idea. Jean Asselborn was born in Steinfort, Luxembourg, in 1949. He is a member of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers\u2019 Party, has been a parliamentarian since 1984 and has been Foreign Minister of his country since 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
