Ludwig van Beethoven\u2019s overture to <em>Fidelio<\/em> opens the evening with a heroic flourish: a passionate plea for courage, freedom and hope. A new work by the Danish composer Matias Vesterg\u00e5rd, commissioned jointly by two Danish orchestras and the Osnabr\u00fcck Symphony Orchestra, adds a contemporary touch. The piano part is performed by the Danish pianist Gustav Piekut. A quiet counterpoint is provided by Lukas Foss\u2019s Elegy for Anne Frank, which links memory and the present, pain and dignity. This exploration of Anne Frank\u2019s legacy is the conceptual continuation of our first music theatre production, the world premiere of Peter van Pels by Anno Schreier. Arthur Honegger\u2019s Symphony No. 3, written in the wake of the horrors of the Second World War, concludes the evening as a poignant call for peace and humanity.
