France and Germany share an eventful history. After centuries of rivalries and wars, the \u00c9lys\u00e9e Treaty of 1963 paved the way for reconciliation and encounters and laid the foundations for close cooperation. In 2019, this commitment to Franco-German friendship was underpinned by the Treaty of Aachen in order to face the challenges of the 21st century together. Franco-German solidarity forms the foundation of the European Union and close relations are of central importance for European integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does friendship between once hostile countries mean, especially at a time when a war of aggression is raging in Europe and nationalism is on the rise in many countries? What impact has the war against Ukraine had on Franco-German cooperation and joint security policy? What role does this special partnership play for the future of Europe and what responsibility does it have? What are the effects of the two neighboring countries’ different basic understandings of economic policy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These and other questions were addressed during the peace talk. Dr. Claire Demesmay, researcher at the Centre Marc Bloch and Head of the Department for Intercultural Education and Training of the Franco-German Youth Office in Berlin, and Prof. Dr. Gy\u00f6rgy Sz\u00e9ll, Sociology, University of Osnabr\u00fcck, took part in the panel discussion. The event was moderated by Bernd K\u00e4sebier, Chairman of the Franco-German Society Osnabr\u00fcck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Lord Mayor of Osnabr\u00fcck’s twin city Angers, Christophe B\u00e9chu, unfortunately had to cancel his participation at short notice due to his commitments following his appointment as Minister for Local Authorities by President Macron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
