Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating civil war. Whilst international attention is often focused on other theatres of conflict, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are fighting for supremacy – with catastrophic consequences for the civilian population. What began as a political power struggle has escalated into one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time. Tens of thousands of people have lost their lives, millions are fleeing, the infrastructure has been destroyed, and hunger and sexual violence are being deliberately used as weapons against the civilian population. International mediation efforts have so far been largely unsuccessful. What are the background and causes of this war? Why has it not been possible to bring the parties to the conflict to the negotiating table? What is the current military and humanitarian situation? What role do regional interests and the international community play? And how can a lasting peace be achieved?
